When we think of granola, we think of healthy food that’s pretty bland, crunchy but usually not very tasty. But when Rachael Ray and Katie Couric raved about Nuts About Granola, we got to check it out ourselves. How tasty can granola get? Well, very tasty. Who’s are the “nuts” behind Nuts About Granola?
Nuts About Granola was conceived through a mother and daughter who shared a passion for cooking together. Gayle and Sarah’s love for the kitchen and a deep understanding of the importance of nutrition developed a treat to help them refuel during various athletic events. This snack, granola, was made fresh, using local ingredients from the Pennsylvania farm belt. As both a student at Elizabethtown College and captain of the school’s triathlon team, Sarah decided to package and sell their granola on campus as a team fundraiser. Sarah’s entrepreneurial spirit combined with the tremendous success of the “Original Trio” flavors (Plain Jane, Lovers Combo, and College Staple) during this fundraiser led Gayle and Sarah to begin taking steps toward building a legitimate business. Nuts About Granola, llc. was incorporated in the Spring of 2008 and built on the foundation of providing the freshest products from local resources to consumers.

Out of all kinds of food, why granola?
I had a recipe for granola I developed out of frustration from a lack of fresh accessible granola in my area. I needed a fundraiser for my College triathlon team for our Nationals trip so I decided to package the product and sell it. It was a HUGE success and the rest is history.



You offer some interesting flavors, S’mores, Jungle Fever, Orange Creamsicle and Carrot cake flavors. Where did you get the inspirations behind these eccentric granola flavors?
I get my inspiration from classic desserts I love. I take a dessert and try to make it into a granola. It is fun and tasty.

What’s the most fun part about making granola?
Mixing the product. We combing the wet and dry ingredients you have to roll up your sleeves and get your (clean) hands dirty. It is really fun!

What’s the hardest part about making granola?
Everything we buy comes in 50-60lb increments. My mom and I are very small in stature. Granola making is surprisingly labor intensive. We are both very fit (thanks to Cross Fit!) so we can handle it. If it wasn’t for that, we wouldn’t be able to make 300-500 lbs over 8 hours.

What do you like to eat your granola with?
Yogurt. Plain to be exact. I love the contrast between the sweet, crunchy granola and the smooth, tart yogurt. It is heaven in a bowl.
